Logo Design- Mod 5





I decided to centralize the idea for my logo around my initials and birthday. In specific, I
focused on my astrological sign and the known ideology behind zodiacs. My zodiac sign
being Capricorn, I looked into the ideas behind it.

Capricorns are based on the element, earth; and are ruled by the planet Saturn. The alchemical
symbol for earth is an upside down equilateral triangle, with a line through it. As well, the
alchemical symbol for Saturn is a lowercase “h” crossed like a “t” is. I decided to sketch
different variations, including a broken triangle and using the “h” in my initials to be crossed
like Saturn’s; but after a few quick renderings I found one I enjoyed. I decided to use a deep
red the fades slowly into green because I feel like it’s welcoming and exciting; as well I chose
to use purple for the lettering because it is one of my favorite colors. I left the “h” less crossed
in the final logo, just to make it look more natural, and because it has its own secret meaning
now. I also left the triangle not completely connected to add visual interest.

 I discovered through this exercise that the proportions of the letters, as well as the angles of
the letters really makes a difference. It is important to play with changing sizes and ratios, as
well as proximity and space in order to find a good compromise to create a uniform logo.

Through the videos and powerpoint I learned how important it is to know what your logo
says to the audience, and that you should let things in life inspire you because that is the
best way to come up with something new and creative.

    I like seeing the progression from the initial sketch. The like the colors chosen for the final one.

Mod 10-Mask

I chose these three images because I believe they provide a good example of the variation of masks in the African art world. In the first mask the artists uses repetition and pattern through the cut out triangles, but also through the placement of the triangles a new form of line is made; implied line. This unrealistic, representation of a face appears to be mimicking that of a frilled lizard with its shield out to scare prey and predators. There is also a strong sense of symmetry. In the second mask the artist takes a more realistic approach to a face, although it is still abstracted and exaggerated. There is exaggeration in the forehead which is emphasized by the beaded hair that is attached. There is symmetry in this mask as well, although it is less exact than the first mask. The artist uses curvilinear geometric shapes like the circle and and the curving X. As well, the lines shown follow the contours of the face, and the shapes could be representing a hairline.

Mod 9- Exploring Line

1. My hands are oddly skinny and long, like piano hands, so they themselves are odd to draw; let alone trying to draw using my non dominant hand. I enjoyed it but it wasn't hard to do once I found a good technique. 2. I chose a hard charcoal pencil I had, mainly because I thought it would be more of a challenge to make the images more defined. I also don't work in charcoal often so I thought I would today. 3. It was odd and uncomfortable to hold the pencil in my left hand, it such a foreign thing to do. I decided to try semi blind contour after trying to do sketchy lines, and I found that if I kept my pencil down but looked and the paper and my hand it was easier than lifting the pencil up; I could go with guidelines then make more accurate lines after. 4. They both clearly show a hand, however I feel like I enjoy my left handed sketch better, only because it's more dynamic than my regular everyday quick sketch of a hand. 5. Growth Mindset Prompt

I created this gmail account with ease; however the blog website wouldn't load until I created it on my phone. Since then it has logged in perfectly fine through computers.  I hope that I will further my vocabulary of art terms, and better my ability to write about art through practice. I expect to learn about art that I knew vaguely and even about art I've never heard of.  Although I'm excited about the versatility of this online class, I'm incredibly nervous that I might get lost, or confused. I worry it may take longer to fix problems because  I may not be able to reach out to students as quickly as I could if the class were to meet somewhere.  Within the Growth Mindset videos there was a student who explained how being involved and keeping in touch with others in your major, and through the school, was a great way to get to know the area.
