Mod 11- Art Gallery Visit 2
I visited To Point a Naked Finger by Christine Sun Kim and Thomas Mader. The exhibition was about the use of facial expressions as a form of communication. The exhibition was made by two influencers in the Deaf community, Christine Sun Kim and Thomas Mader. It is comprised of three videos which featured them using sign language with one another.
The room is the secluded room which is painted black on all four sides and often features filmography. It is a dim-lit room but the videos are bright themselves. There are black cushioned benches for the viewer use while they take in the videos. The videos are projected from the ceiling on either side. The wall that faces the viewer when they first walk in is normally the wall that projects the videos, but instead this wall was blank. The wall hidden from the viewer and those on either side are being used to project the videos. The viewer stays relatively still, looking back and forth from the middle of the room.
The videos themselves contain different things. On the left side of the entrance is Christine Sun Kim with text underneath her; with every blurb that it reads, she uses facial expressions to demonstrate how she would react. On the right is Thomas Mader doing the same thing. These two videos oscillate, each of them taking turns, as if they were going back and forth with each other, rather than just for the viewer. The video on the wall of the entrance contains Thomas’ arms in front of Christine’s body, with her arms behind her back. In this video her signs simple signs and she uses her face to communicate how one would react in the situation; again with the text under them. One example was when two people are in line and the one in front is taking too long; Christine puts on a pout and rolls her eyes while Thomas points his finger around to look at the other person (each finger representing a person). All three of these are very similar videos, showing how ASL uses the face and how other people do too. The space is very enclosed and makes you step into a world of observation.
