Mod 11 Video Reviews
1. I chose “Impact of Cubism” and “Matisse and Picasso” because I enjoy learning about Picasso and his work. I knew he was one of the lead artists in cubism. I also thought that the book could’ve talked more about cubism and its connection to other genres.
2. The video “Impact of Cubism” explained the genre of art and how it has changed the art movement before it and inspired new genres. Cubism involves an image dissected into its basic structures and then reconstructed into a more dynamic, complicated image. Cubism is based around using collage and oblique angles. There is no linear perspective, instead there are multiple perspectives. Cubism compared to stop motion images. Balla’s “Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash” reflects the basic principles of cubism, in terms of perspective. Cubism can also be used to talk about political views and conflict at the time. One of the more famous artists to lead cubism on was Duchamp, who, at his most abstract, created flowing boxes that moved through his pieces that represented figures. Cubism was a form of expressionism and collage that paved the way for surrealism to eventually be explored.
The video “Matisse and Picasso” discussed the similarities and differences between the two artists. They both created cubist artwork, but both of them were very different people.Matisse thought things through while Picasso was an impulsive worker. Picasso showed flat sides of a form from different angles like that of Egyptian art. He later developed his work into the use of collage. Overall both artists wanted to create a work separate from life, brighter than life. Both also wanted to simplify, using bold lines and shapes. Picasso also worked from memory, rather than from a still life or model. Both also used sculpture but as a tool rather than a medium.
3. Just like in the videos, the book explained how European expressionism slowly morphed into the new genre, cubism. The book explained that cubism recreated how a form is represented. The book also mentions that Matisse is one of the fauves, or beasts of a painter, for how simplified his work was. The book also went into further detail on Picasso’s female muses.
4. Both videos did a good job explaining what cubism was meant to do and why it is made. I do wish that the first video gave more examples of different artists rather than just focusing on a couple, just for variety.
