Mod 12 Video Reviews
1. I chose “Andy Warhol: Images of an Image” because I enjoy Warhol’s work and his story. He is the beginner of pop art, and made the silkscreen something greater than it ever was. I chose “The Art of Henry Moore” because he was an artist I didn’t remember learning about and I wanted to know what his work was like. Both artists use a greater meaning to why they chose the art style that they have.
2. “Andy Warhol: Images of an Image” is a discussion on Warhol’s famous tendencies. Warhol made reproductions of advertisements from newspaper with a projector and acrylics. H eventually used silk screen printing. He could create a single screen for many works, which lead him to be able to mass produce them. His lack of midtones and color variation allows his work to convey little to no original emotional meaning, but re develop what the image means. Warhol used his work to demonstrate his opinion on societal and political problems at the time. His work was about materialism and society’s obsession with it, all while Warhol himself was obsessed with fame.
3. The video, “Andy Warhol: Images of an Image”, didn’t mention much about the factory that Warhol made for himself with a few friends; but it did go into depth about the meaning behind Warhol’s work. Both the reading and the video explained his obsessive use of printing images of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and soup cans. I feel like the video made up for the parts of Warhol’s story that the book failed to mention. The book gives more description on his life but I feel I know his intent from the video.
2. “The Art of Henry Moore” showed that Moore did a lot of studies that were more realistic than his sculptures. He used two recurring themes: the mother and child, and a reclining figure. He combined the two themes in many of his later work. His work was representational and abstracted, becoming more abstract over time. He over simplified figures and objects; not wanting them to be pretty, but harmonious and beautiful. Moore wanted to focus on deep meaning, not immediate appearance.
3. The video “The Art of Henry Moore” shows a side of art the book doesn’t really talk much about. The book went into talking about the meaning behind minimalism, which I would say is the most similar form of art to Henry Moore’s. Both are representational, abstract, simplified, and based on meaning alone. The video explained minimalism when it is applied to figures, which is not a very common art form.
4. I think that the first video added to my knowledge of Warhol’s intent, while the book gave me information on his home life I didn’t even know before. The book mentions a ton of art genres and how they started but Henry Moore just makes artwork that is in a subcategory of its own. I enjoyed the videos this week.
