Mod 13 and 14- Video Review
“The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art”
1. Lowbrow art is uncategorical, it is a reaction to highbrow art and social expectations. Some of it is based on psychedelic abstract representation, but all of it is based on narrative. Most lowbrow art contains dark humor, mainly used to ease the dramatic visuals. The genre was what pop art transformed into in the 1980’s and 90’s, with the influence of folk art. This was the introduction of the internet age, when anyone could see anything, and artwork didn’t need to be accepted into galleries to be well known. The genre celebrates individual style rather than creating a general style that is strived for, the way that Renaissance art was established.
“BBC Culture show: Tate Modern is 10! (Part 5)”
1. This museum is rapidly changing the art that is shown, constantly rearranging what the walls show. They are taking pieces from completely different genres and juxtaposing them to show their similarities. By doing so they create a previously unknown connection between artwork from different places, cultures, and time frames.
“An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan Museum of Art”
1. This museum organizes artwork by the location and culture that it has come from. Many of the works shown are made with different mediums, like silkwork embroidery and ancient clay sculptures. The museum has donors who established an endowment fund in order for the museum to purchase famous artwork. The museum strives to create a different mood with every room you walk into.
2. These videos all relate to my art exhibition project in their own ways. The first video is similar in that my project is based on a more modern less traditional style of art. Although the land art that I chose is not the same as lowbrow art, it does challenge the tradition of art and the stereotypes that are made about what art can be. The second video is similar in that all of the artwork that I chose is made by individual artists that each create their own work, while all of the pieces are oddly cohesive. The third video is similar in that all of the pieces shown in the video were organized by time period and material. All of the artwork in my project was made around the same time period, all based around earth materials.
3. Personally, the order in which I have listed them is also the order in which I enjoyed them, most to least respectively. The three videos are great for inspiring someone making a gallery exhibition. Of course, doing this online gives me an unrealistic opportunity of displaying anything I want, as long as it’s on the internet; but it is great practice.
