Mod 16- Reflection

1. I expected to be very confused and to find it hard to learn, but that wasn’t true. I did procrastinate a ton, a lot more than I would have if I had had less homework that was due more often. 2. Art is a lot of different things depending on where you go. Overall it is a form of expression, that holds importance, and maintains visual cohesion. 3. My favorite artists in my posting included Robert Carter and Philip Burke, but I recently remembered how great Andy Goldsworthy’s work is. I don’t think that I will ever have a favorite artist; there are things I like and don’t like from every artist I’ve listed. I believe I just go through times of appreciating artists. 4. I still don’t prefer online classes. I enjoy the reliability of seeing a professor or even the class every other day, and that it feels more like a team trying to learn together, whereas this was more isolating. I was initially worried if I got confused I’d be behind, but none of the material was confusing; but I al

Pablo Picasso, Guernica, 11’ 6” x 25’ 6” Oil on Canvas April 26, 1937- June 1937 This painting was meant to be a political statement about the Nazi bombings within Guernica, Spain; this occuring during the Spanish Civil War. It was catastrophic, and full of tragedy. The piece was meant to exploit war and to call for the need of peace. The faces shown are twisted around, and show terror, fear and pain in their features. There is a fallen soldier with a broken sword, a woman crying over a dead man, and animals and people running. He also uses sharp angles to emphasize the dynamics of the scene. The work itself, outside of its meaning, is based in cubism and early surrealism. It shows objects and forms collaged together, as well it shows multiple perspectives together. Picasso uses the different blocks of varying value ranges to emphasize both foreground, and to place importance on the individuals rather than on the scene of war around them. The painting was made within the first

Mod 15 Art Gallery and Self Portraits

1. I chose these three pieces because they seemed like two very different types of self-portraits. There is the quiltmaking in which every piece needs to be planed based on color, size, shape; then there’s the oil painting that seemed so casual. I wanted to make something that was casual yet focused on details. 2. I chose graphite pencil because it is the material I have the practice with. I feel like I can control my pencil better than I can paint, or charcoal. 3. At first I had made my contrast too low, I wasn't drawing dark enough and in return I washed out my marks. So I went into the deepest shadows and made them very dark, then darkened the midtones to match and blend into the highlights. 4. It only represents me physically. In no way does it show me or my personality, or who I am. I didn’t want it to be more than a study of myself in the mirror. Like the examples, they have little personality showing, some goofiness in the third, but for the most part they a

I created this slideshow of a virtual art exhibition with the theme of land art, in which earth materials are utilized to create outdoor installation artwork. I began this presentation after remembering an artist who was presented to me by my past professors, Andy Goldsworthy. I searched for his art and came across the art of Nils- Udo, Nancy Holt, Walter Mason, Cornelia Konrads, and Andres Amador. I ordered each artwork to be most cohesive with the next, instead of by artist, in order to give it a real gallery feel. They are organized visually. Mod 13 and 14- Video Review

“The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art” 1. Lowbrow art is uncategorical, it is a reaction to highbrow art and social expectations. Some of it is based on psychedelic abstract representation, but all of it is based on narrative. Most lowbrow art contains dark humor, mainly used to ease the dramatic visuals. The genre was what pop art transformed into in the 1980’s and 90’s, with the influence of folk art. This was the introduction of the internet age, when anyone could see anything, and artwork didn’t need to be accepted into galleries to be well known. The genre celebrates individual style rather than creating a general style that is strived for, the way that Renaissance art was established. “BBC Culture show: Tate Modern is 10! (Part 5)” 1. This museum is rapidly changing the art that is shown, constantly rearranging what the walls show. They are taking pieces from completely different genres and juxtaposing them to show their similarities. By doing so they create a previousl
